Last summer Pete Codella, who is Accredited in public relations, developed a new course for the University of California, Irvine Extension.

The course, Using Social Media as a Tool for Public Relations, is a 1.5 credit class that's part of the university's PR and Web 2.0 online curriculum. Specifically, it's an elective course in the Public Relations 2.0 Specialized Studies Program.

Those interested in the Spring 2010 six week class, which runs from May 3 to June 13 and costs $600, can sign-up on UCI's website.

Course Description

Using Social Media as a Tool for Public Relations (MGMT X466.7)

Public relations is about mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and the audiences on which their success or failure depends. Key audiences of every kind can now be reached through new technology. Social media are especially helpful in fostering communication with and listening to key constituencies.

It's now incumbent upon public relations professionals to not only be familiar with, but also to implement and manage a myriad of effective online communication channels.

This course will discuss all types of social media - from social networking to publishing content on blogs, newsrooms and wikis, to multimedia sharing and bookmarking - as part of an effective online public relations strategy.

About the Instructor

Pete Codella, B.A., Accredited in Public Relations, is CEO of Codella Marketing, a public relations and marketing firm in Salt Lake City that's focused on utilizing new technology in the practice of public relations.
